Aizu-nuri lacquerware is said to have a history of more than 400 years, and one woman is working to breathe new life into this traditional craft genre.
Meet Nihei Yuko, a maki-e artist in Aizuwakamatsu City (Maki-e is the application of gold- and silver-powder designs on lacquerware.) Yuko's father was a maki-e artist. Inspire by him, she decided to attend a school for training in lacquering and maki-e, eventually becoming a maki-e artist herself.
Her works combine traditional Japanese lacquering with Northern European design elements as she strives to create products that give people a warm, happy feeling inside. This pursuit is, in fact, her passion.
While developing and refining her skills together alongside other young artisans and artists from the same generation who come to learn and work in the Aizu region, Nihei strives to cultivate a new future for traditional crafts.
